| HIGHLIGHT OF HIS FIRST GREAT PERIOD - Scores 5/5
Bobby Womack is one of the great soul musicians - he has a wonderfully warm voice and a uniquely laid back style. His two career highs were this album and 'Communication' in the early 70s and the first two 'Poet' albums ten years or so later. As well as the classic single 'Harry Hippie' this album - like 'Communication' - relies heavily on cover versions that shouldn't really work but somehow do, the best of which is his reworking of 'Ruby, don't take your love to town'. The whole album has a mellow low-key groove running through it, which makes it feel like one extended track. Great for relaxing to. Charly Records have released it in "2 albums on 1 CD" format with 'Communication' - if you can track it down in that form it is twice as good. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 18 FEBRUARY 2003 |
